The Basics

WHEN TO GO

With over 260 days of sunshine annually and its mild Mediterranean winters, Greece can be visited throughout the year.

GETTING THERE

Athens connects with direct flights to major airports in the US, Canada, and the Middle East. A direct flight from New York to Athens is approximately 10 hours. The smaller airport of Naxos has direct flights to/from Athens, while the airport of Santorini is connected with several major cities in Europe.

GETTING AROUND

You can use a private car/van for moving around in Athens, and for covering small distances on land. Archaeological sites and most beaches can easily be reached by car, but a 4X4 might be necessary for certain mountain roads.

FIRST~TIME MUSTS

Culture: A melting pot of cultures and historical eras, contemporary Greece is home to great museums, galleries, art fairs, and festivals. Don’t leave Athens without visiting the Acropolis and the Museum of the Acropolis.

Culinary: Greek cuisine is one of the best and most famous examples of a Mediterranean~style diet. Thanks to its outstanding local products Naxos is a treasure trove for food lovers. Try the cheeses, highly praised by Greeks, such as graviera (similar to gruyere) and kefalotyri called arseniko (masculine).

Great Outdoors: From the emblematic Acropolis Hill to the crystal waters of the Cycladic sea… Greece is the best option for outdoor activities like food tours, sailing, and village tours.

History: Being a city with over 5,000 years of history, Athens is full of unique monuments, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and architectural landmarks from different eras, including 20th~century neoclassicist and modernist buildings. When in Santorini, visit Akrotiri, the Pompei of Greece.
